A new society in need of branding that celebrated their community's heritage to become a welcoming space for students seeking celebration, connection, representation.
Within the university cultural society space, visual identities often rely on a narrow set of cultural symbols to communicate African and Caribbean heritage. Hair picks, drums, flags, and Black Power iconography have become the default visual language, reducing rich and diverse cultures into a handful of recognisable motifs.
The challenge was to create a brand that thoughtfully used cultural symbolism that reflected the connection, community, and cultural expression of GCU ACS.
GCU ACS's most valuable purpose was more than a space for their community, but a community to celebrate with and wear with pride.
By shifting the focus from using societies as a place for organisation and development, the brand was repositioned around a simple belief: that culture is more than heritage on display. It's a living expression of community, resilience, and connection.
This idea shaped an identity inspired by one of the most powerful symbols within the African diaspora: braided hair. Historically, braids carried woven maps, they were paths to freedom. They became symbols of resistance, creativity, survival, and hope. Drawing from this history, the logo places the African Caribbean Society as the map to community, resilience, and connection through modern expression. This follows through into the brand patterns that are made of individual stories woven together to create something stronger as a collective.

The result is a visual language that feels contemporary and expressive while remaining deeply rooted in the African diaspora remaining deeply rooted in cultural meaning.
Because the strongest community-led brands don't just represent the culture of its people. They carry their stories forward.
" Working with Rosie was such a smooth and inspiring process. She instantly understood my vision and brought it to life even better than I imagined. Her creativity, attention to detail, and ability to translate ideas into a strong visual identity made the whole experience effortless. I couldn't have asked for a better designer to capture the essence of what ACS stands for."
